Building a Portfolio Without Making a Portfolio

Notes on making a site feel like a working archive instead of a polished template.

Note

The trap is making a portfolio that explains too much and reveals too little. The better shape is an archive with enough structure to move through it and enough incompleteness to feel alive.

Rules

  • Start with typography and grid.
  • Let metadata carry the mood.
  • Make work feel like files, not sales material.
  • Leave room for notes that are not finished.
